Design and construction, what’s the process?

Before you jump on the phone or rush out looking for something, let me give you some info on what a cabinetmaker like myself needs to know, and what processes he does to make your idea a reality.

The process is basically as follow:

- Gather information
- Arrange a meeting with designer
- Approve detailed shop drawings
- Manufacture
- Installation

Gather information

A cabinetmaker and designer is going to need information about what you are planning on housing in your cabinet. Also, what style or finish you like.

Firstly you need to work out what equipment is going to be living in your cabinet. Including additional storage space if needed. Things you should think about are:

- Do you want (or need) to conceal speakers?
- Do you want to have your monitor sitting on the cabinet or wall mounted
- Where is the best location in your room for your cabinet? Taking into account wall sizes, monitor size, seating distance etc?
- Do you require DVD/CD storage?

Don’t worry if your unsure about anything, you can always ask advice at the meeting stage.

Gather a list of all your equipment and components and note down their sizes. This is important because your overall cabinet size will depend on these sizes.

Next, you want to have a think about what style or finish you are after. We have a few designs listed on our website that hopefully helps you with the style choice. But, you will still need to decide what colour or finish you like. For example, do you prefer painted or timber?

Colour and finish is very personal so it’s a good idea to at least think about it before you go to the meeting stage.

Arrange meeting with designer

Once you have gathered all your information and have armed yourself with your equipment sizes and style you like, its time to give us a call or send an email.

Contact details

I like to suggest if you can come out to our workshop and showroom with your information, its time well spent. We have cabinet’s set-up that we can show you, allowing for you to see for yourself the quality of construction and methods of dealing with AV equipment that we use.

Home theatre and furniture showroom

Almost all freestanding cabinets can be discussed at our showroom or via email to establish a quote. However, should a cabinet require fitting between walls, an onsite visit by our designer would be preferable.

Majority of the time a phone call combined with an email is all that is needed to establish what you require, allowing us enough information to quote on.

Once all the details have been discussed with you and a design agreed on, Blue Gum Joinery will prepare a quote for you. Because all of our designs are made to order, with various different materials and finishes, we like to quote on each job.

Should you be happy to proceed and pay your deposit, your designer will move onto prepare detailed drawings.

Approve Shop Drawings

One of the advantages of using high tech machinery and software to create our joinery, is the benefits you get in knowing what you see in a drawing is what you will get.

We use one of the latest specialty industry design software packages in the market today. Our software is designed specifically for the design and manufacture of joinery, which means more accuracy for you.

Detailed Shop Drawings

When we create shop drawings, these drawings are actually also all the information our machines need to cut out your job. You can be sure that if the drawings states a hole is in a particular point, that hole will be in exactly that point when you get your finished product.

Once we have completed your drawing, taking into account all your component sizes (to scale). We will then forward you a copy to look over yourself or have your audio-visual installer approve.

Only when you are satisfied with your design will we move onto the construction stage.

Manufacture

Cabinet making has changed incredibly over the last 10 years. Arguably, gone are the days of a cabinetmaker marking and cutting cabinet parts out by hand. Old school cabinetmakers will argue that the skills are lost these days.

It’s my view that “old school” cabinet making skills may very well be lost these days, but new age materials and techniques require new age skills. Skills that a cabinetmaker must learn to go forward. This is why Blue Gum Joinery has invested in the latest machinery, and will continue to evolve as the technology moves even more forward.

Computer Controlled Machinery

The advantage for you the consumer is when this technology is used to build high quality product’s, no amount of “old school” skills can come close to the accuracy and finish that can be achieved. Giving you a better product.

Installation

Once your cabinet is ready to be delivered or installed, we will coordinate with you and your builder/AV installer to see everything runs smoothly.

Our installers are all employees of Blue Gum Joinery, so you can be assured all care will be taken. Vacuum cleaner, drop sheets and the like will be supplied and used by Blue Gum to protect your property.

We do not use contract installers. In fact, it’s very likely the person who constructed your cabinet in the workshop will also be the person installing it on-site.
